2026 Declared the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming seems particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
