The UK Foreign Office has included eleven further destinations to its public alert roster about the threats of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after multiple serious events such as the tragic loss of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of methanol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?

Methanol is a harmful substance commonly used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for drinking.

Although it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Government Recommendations for Travellers

Foreign Office official the minister said that all travellers should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol contamination.

"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official said.

"In case something feels off, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention fast."

The complete list of nations listed as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
