Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing undesired offerings can be viewed as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The diverse haul reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date is yet to be set, although the intention is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with the revenue going to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Treasures

The presents are said to be locked away in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question focused on if a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

A Global Assortment of Presents

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from within her party, with winning over global statesmen and making Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative represents a novel approach to manage the protocol gifts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
