Chiefs Acknowledge Alleged Abuse Claims Connected to Player the Athlete
The Kansas City Chiefs issued a statement Wednesday night indicating they have knowledge of claims of abuse made public in online accounts by a former girlfriend of wide receiver the athlete and were in communication with the NFL.
The team omitted the name of the player by name in their statement and said they would have “nothing more to add at this time”.
Allegations Posted on Social Media
The woman, who also did not mention Rice directly, shared a set of images on social media that appeared to show indicators of bodily harm. She stated the individual in question was the father of her children, and reports indicate she has two children with Rice, whom the team drafted in the second round.
Official Complaints Reportedly Unavailable
No official complaints were on file in Overland Park, Kansas where the alleged abuse is said to have taken place.
Player's Recent Legal Issues
Rice was absent for the initial part of this season following an league-mandated ban for his role in causing a crash on a Texas roadway that left multiple people injured. He was sentenced 30 days in jail and probationary supervision after pleading guilty to serious offenses.
On the field, he concluded the season with 53 receptions for 571 receiving yards and five TDs as the Kansas City finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
