AI-generated graphics purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained after his apprehension by the American authorities have gained countless of views on social media.

How AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours

The first fabricated synthetic picture apparently displaying him led off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. This image was unpublished by any verified American sources; rather, it was posted on X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, determining the picture was created or altered with Google AI.

Further synthetic visuals started circulating in the ensuing period, purporting to present different views of Maduro in custody. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures reveal they were posted by an Instagram account named ultravfx.

SynthID indicates the further pictures were similarly created or altered generative models.

Real Photo Posted but Fakes Continued

The former US president posted the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after the authentic image was released, synthetic images continued to spread but were updated to incorporate the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics indicate these updated fakes were originally uploaded on the video platform by a graphic design account. Once again, the AI-watermark detector confirms these subsequent pictures were produced with Google AI.
