Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates in the frame to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the former Luton Town manager - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club board as they begin the process of hiring a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to pay any buyout fee.
