Yet following the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this isn’t a league featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. It’s one where the bulk of franchises are merely adequate.

Clear Picture in NFC

Looking at the NFC side, to some degree, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (both standing at seven wins, two losses) look like the most well-rounded squads in football, and delivered overwhelming triumphs on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 even with their challenges maintain among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, similar to Green Bay (5-2-1 record). The Lions also (6-3), despite their uneven performances on offense and defense while managing tension on their coaching staff, have proven they can defeat quality opponents. For each of these squads, it's straightforward to put together a Super Bowl path.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Over in the AFC, postseason landscape is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions at this stage: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) and Steelers (five wins, four losses). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or have been hit by injuries.

Parity Mechanics

To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching this season's top AFC teams in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Areas of each team meet championship standards, but not in their entirety. Team Breakdowns

Indianapolis Colts

Beginning with the Colts, Daniel Jones hasn't descended to complete disaster level. However, recent performances have caused alarm. He has returned to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He suffered seven sacks facing Atlanta during Sunday's contest, and had a brief period in which he threw a pick and coughed up the ball thrice. This follows he turned the ball over on five occasions against the Steelers.

Indianapolis' offensive unit excelled during early games as Jones prevented game-changing errors. The running back and protection unit mean the Colts are good enough to survive some negative plays, as demonstrated overseas. Yet Jones going back to his previous error-filled form would finish any playoff run.

Patriots Examination

The Patriots seem somewhat similar. Last season, they were league laughingstocks. Currently, they represent the league’s happiest surprise and the strongest squad across the league post seven wins in a row. If not for losing due to fumbles a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess a 9-1 record as the league's best. Previously, they appeared aged and sluggish. Currently they're young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've played against the easiest slate across the NFL, yet vulnerabilities remain. Drake Maye has been sacked on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – and some of the shots he suffered last weekend appeared dangerous. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are also 8-2, and it still feels like they're nervously waiting. Bo Nix has performed unevenly, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles most of the responsibility. Absent adequate signal-calling, Denver cannot intimidate any playoff team. The Chargers are also hovering in the AFC West with seven wins, but the injuries along their offensive line will create difficulties to mount a deep postseason tilt.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, inexplicably frontrunning the Northern division even after suffering a 25-10 defeat from the Chargers during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints at this stage of his career continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, however, the Ravens, featuring a recovered Jackson and the schedule softening, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that Baltimore has closed to within one game of Pittsburgh, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started the season 1-5 and still look like likely to claim the title is telling about the complete conference.

Established Contenders

The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, who could still create the greatest concern for opponents should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo continue to self-destruct.

Buffalo Bills

Previously, Buffalo was celebrating following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered among the season's worst defeats during the campaign. They didn't simply fail against Miami; they were embarrassed, falling 30-13 on the road. This represented Miami's initial victory against Buffalo in over three years.
