Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track right in his path

The dangerous situation happened on the third rotation when track officials were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"

"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is currently investigating the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was advised that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the governing body

"During the third lap, track officials were notified and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"

"The examination is ongoing what happened following that moment"
