India Earns Win Against Rival Pakistan During Controversy, Bewilderment - plus Insect Invasion

Pakistan Expresses Displeasure When Match Official Debatably Alters Run-out Verdict

ICC Women's World Cup, Colombo

India 247 (Fifty overs): Deol's 46 runs (65 balls); Baig 4-69

Pakistani Total 159 (43-over innings): Sidra Amin 81 (106 balls); Goud's 3 wickets for 20

Indian side triumphed by 88 runs

Team India preserved their flawless opening during the championship with a comfortable 88-run victory against arch-rivals Pakistan in Sri Lanka.

Harleen Deol top-scored making 46 runs as Richa Ghosh hammered a not-out 35 from 20 balls late on to boost India's total to 247 in an innings that featured several hitters begin well without converting.

Bowler Diana Baig secured 4/69 as the Pakistani attack bowled out the Indian team initially during women's limited overs match off the final delivery of the innings yet an initial triumph continued to evade them.

Post dropping to twenty-six for three during their pursuit, Pakistan momentarily fought back through Sidra Amin - who proceeded to score 81 in 105-ball innings after being dropped on three occasions - along with Natalia Pervaiz put on 69 during their fourth-wicket stand.

However India, spearheaded by Goud's three for twenty, maintained their focus to bowl Pakistan out for 159 in the 43rd over and climb to the top of the tournament table.

As commonly occurs during India-Pakistan encounters, however, there developed considerably more to the match, with controversy and confusion sprinkled during the match...

Dismissal Controversy

Possibly the major conversation topic emerged from an incident early in Pakistan's innings when opener Muneeba was debatably given out running.

The left-hander got hit on the protective padding by Goud and as the India bowler appealed without success for LBW, Deepti collected the loose ball and launched at the bails.

She struck however video evidence revealed Muneeba had placed her bat before the ball entered the frame and a 'safe' verdict from the match official Klaaste was displayed on the big screen in the venue.

However, ahead of the match continuing, the decision was looked at again and it transpired that when the ball hit the stumps and removed the bails, Muneeba had lifted her bat and was still stood outside her crease.

While the batter had already grounded her bat and was not trying to take a quick run, the TV official altered her ruling to 'given out' and notwithstanding Pakistani objections, which saw leader Fatima Sana instruct her player to stay at the ground briefly, the batter had to exit.

Adding another layer, had India simply reviewed the lbw decision, the whole controversy could have been prevented because ball-tracking showed Muneeba was plumb lbw.

What do the regulations of the game say?

30.1 Concerning leaving the crease

Rule 30.1.1 A batter shall be considered as having left their crease except when some portion of his/her person or bat is grounded behind the batting crease at that side.

Section 30.1.2 Nevertheless, a player shall not be deemed to be out of his/her ground when, during running or diving toward their ground and past, and after placing some part of the player or equipment beyond the popping crease, there occurs subsequent loss of contact between the field and any element of the player or equipment, or between equipment and player.

'Tails becomes heads call'

Uncertainty when Pakistan wrongly given flip against India

It should have been clear that events would not become uncomplicated in this contest from the very toss.

Within an environment of political tensions among the two nations, that captains Sana and Harmanpreet Kaur did not shake hands was expected - especially given the precedent set in recent matches involving the male teams.

However, no-one could have predicted that Sana would call wrongly yet gain the flip.

The team leader shouted "tails" as the Indian captain spun the coin yet umpire Shandre Fritz misheard and announced "heads is the call".

Broadcaster and former Australia batter Mel Jones was conducting the toss and reiterated Fritz's words, heads appeared and it was announced that Pakistan secured the toss.

No skipper challenged it thus Sana could advance and verify that the Pakistani side would chase.

A harmless blunder and since India triumphed in any case, no harm done.
