Japan's Economy Declines as Overseas Sales Suffer by US Tariffs
The Japanese economic system has shown a contraction for the initial time in six quarters, mainly driven by falling exports because of recent American trade duties.
G7 Growth Standings
The Japanese economy has become the first Group of Seven nation to announce an GDP decline in the latest quarter.
With the US yet to publish its GDP data for Q3 2025, the current Group of Seven growth rankings show:
- France: +0.5% expansion
- UK: +0.1%
- Canadian economy: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
- German economy: 0%
- Italy: 0%
- Japanese economy: -0.4%
Tourism Shares Slump during Political Rift with Beijing
In addition to the GDP decline, Japan is experiencing an intensifying political dispute with China concerning Taiwan.
Stocks in Japan's tourism and consumer companies have fallen noticeably after China recommended its citizens to avoid visiting to Japan.
This action by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was sparked by remarks from Tokyo's recently appointed prime minister about the potential of deploying forces in the case of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation led to a wave of selling across Japanese leisure shares.
- Oriental Land stock dropped by 5.7%
- The department store chain plummeted by 11.3%
- The national carrier fell by 3.75 percent
"The ongoing tension over Taiwan and Beijing's travel warning discouraging travel to Japan brings near-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.
"Tourists from China account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's international visitors, making department stores, high-end shopping, and tourism services especially vulnerable."
Economic Decline Breakdown
Japanese gross domestic product dropped by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, as industrial exports were affected by tariffs levied by the United States recently.
Overseas shipments were a primary driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2% compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a year ago.
Previously, the US administration had threatened Japan with a new 25 percent tariff on its goods, which was later lowered to 15% when the two countries concluded a trade deal.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was solid in the first half of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that growth is halted for now.
I anticipate Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate recovery trend going forward."
The White House has lately recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, lowering duties on imported food products including meat, tomatoes, coffee and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
