We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
