Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories Following Player Detentions
The Miami Heat recorded 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since player Terry Rozier was detained over alleged illegal sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was additionally arrested in connection with a broad federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers additionally won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
Silver further mentioned an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."

Rockets were defeated 115-111 by the Pistons even with thirty-seven points from Durant, while Wembanyama had 29 scores, 11 rebounds and 9 blocks in the Spurs' overtime win over the New Orleans.
