Norris Rejects Oscar Piastri's Criticisms Regarding Singapore GP Passing Attempt

Lando Norris delivered an uncompromising reply to the criticisms from his teammate Oscar Piastri after their contact at the Singapore Grand Prix, stating that any racer that would not attempt a comparable passing move ought not be in Formula One.

Race Incident Triggers Team Tensions

The Grand Prix at the Marina Bay circuit was claimed for Mercedes Russell, but was marked due to the incident during the opening corners, where Norris went after Piastri then made contact with Piastri after Norris had nudged the Red Bull of Verstappen ahead.

“Anyone in Formula One would have tried exactly the same move that I did, so if you fault me for only taking the inside line of a big gap you ought not compete in Formula One,” he declared. “There was completely fine with my actions.”

Championship Battle Intensifies

The two McLaren drivers are engaged in a direct battle to win the drivers’ world championship, with the team claiming the constructors’ championship in Singapore. Both drivers ended up in third and fourth places, with Lando reduced the points gap on his title rival down to twenty-two points and six races left.

Piastri was angry during the race, decrying that it was wrong that the team did not step in to make Lando return the place since he argued he had barged Piastri off the line. Nonetheless, the stewards did not intervene.

Driver's Explanation

I underestimated slightly the proximity I was to Verstappen, but that's part of racing and I would have come out ahead of Oscar anyway,” said Norris. I took the inside line so the last thing I intended to do is to make contact with my teammate. Given my title position I am in, I cannot afford to do that compared to Piastri. Race officials deemed it fine and the team agreed.”

Teammate's Reaction

Oscar Piastri stated he would reserve judgment until the team held a meeting. I have to examine at the video and more closely and reach my conclusion then,” he stated. This was the first lap, tensions are high and drivers are encouraged to express our perspectives regarding the clash. I did that and we will discuss it going forward.”

Team Principal's Viewpoint

McLaren's boss Stella also maintained the team would evaluate their method for handling their drivers. “We have to put the situation in perspective. It’s the comments of a driver in a Formula One car, there’s the heat of the moment. The information that is available is just his point of view. As usual we will have a productive talk, build from there and improve.”
