It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to make up for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
