The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
