"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos frequently feature them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"And thus all are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The band are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes track endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound resilience required a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

Yet the band will consistently be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
